Please give us a short summary of your business?
Distant Assistant 4U provides remote secretarial services to its clients. Imagine being in your office in California and pressing a remote control and having someone provide you with excellent secretarial services from Georgia. The benefit to this type of secretarial service is not having a personal assistant when you need one; you don't have to purchase extra office equipment; if you are a home-based business; you don't have to have anyone in your personal space; and you don't have to pay for Worker's Comp or other employee benefits. Distant Assistant 4U purchases all of their own office supplies and equipment, pays their own taxes, and insurance.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
Today, most businesses are driven by computers, technology and the World Wide Web. Even individuals who are not computer savvy find themselves lost without a computer; from searching for directions to finding a specialty physician. Since we have become so reliant on computers and can find so much information through this wonderful technology, a website can be crucial to the success or failure of one's business. When someone mentions a company or organization, one of the first places to look for information is the Internet; the thought is, "No website - not a company, or at the least - not a reputable company." We can even find out if a company has a bad reputation on the Internet. Since I never meet about 99% of my clients, a web presence is vital to my business success.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
My first website was launched in 2007, an ecommerce site for the sale of framed prints (art). The site also included a page for featured artists to display their beautiful works of art.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
The name for my website came by way of a process of elimination. I had to name my website before I named my business in order to ensure they would match. Even though I was thinking of names off the top of my head, so many of them had already been taken; so I had to actually add to one of the names I had come up with.
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
There are quite a few good Virtual Assistant websites out there; however, I think my website shows simplicity and cleanliness. The website is not cluttered with too much information, nor does it have information that may not be of interest to my clients.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
My plan is to keep the website and continue to make improvements. The website is a marketing steering wheel which drives individuals to my business. Presently, there is no plan for a mainstream media deal, but one can dream and there's always hope.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
So far, I have invested more time than I have made in money; but one of the great things is that I'm having fun. I'm doing what I enjoy and that's more important to me than money. Of course, money is one of the key factors in business and I have every intention of making plenty of it - but we all know that you have to crawl before you walk. Yes, I want the success now, but I know it will come because God is good and He made me good at what I do.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Absolutely! There are plenty of good, talented people who need a job. One of my goals is to provide jobs to people in need. There are people who would like to be able to work from home and still make a decent income. My goals are not just for myself, but also to benefit others who might be stuck in a hard situation and can't pull themselves out of a rut.
What has been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge Ive been faced with has been running the business. Owning your own business is not as easy as one might think. Providing the service or selling the product isn't the hard part; it's staying in compliance with state and federal laws, keeping track of profit and loss, and not spending all the profit. As a business owner, you have to remember to stay focused on all aspects of the business, not just the fun stuff.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
Yes. As mentioned previously, any business needs to have a Web presence to be considered "a reputable business." Of course, a business can survive without a website, but I'd rather be there when someone reaches out to find me.
