In a press conference held in India last Wednesday, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuotold reporters that "the PC and the mobile will continue to come closer and merge.". He also mentioned that the giant mobile company is "looking at the Netbook market to see what kind of opportunity is there."
Actually, Nokia is "slightly" not new in this field. They have released a couple of smartphones which is a total mobile computer in its own rights. The new N97 is a testament to that. They have also been actively selling their mobile internet devices such as the N-series tablets.
These gadgets that Nokia are making comes with a full QWERTY keyboard much like the ones we used in our desktops and laptops. They are able to connect to the internet as well via WiFi, Bluetooth or a wired connection using port converters.
However, Nokia has not made any "real" netbooks. They have only slightly touched the technology for it but has not ventured on it quite fully. If Nokia decides to enter the netbook market, Nokia mobile phone fanboys will surely be their biggest customers.
If Nokia decides on taking the netbook path, their product diversification is most likely be one of the most successful.
Nokia is selling their smartphones for a range of $300 to almost $500, almost the price of a late model Dell computer. If Nokia ventures into this field, I will surely wonder if they will be the like of Apple with its expensive line of products, will it be an HP or a Dell. Or maybe, they can make their own Nokia impression.
