The Art Of Calculating

By Office Bull at 06/03/08 04:39

, Calculators: Scientific Calculator

Aristotle, Galileo, Archimedes et al. They are people who are famous for their calculations. They are people who are famous for calculating vast figures, with just their minds. It's manual calculating. Seriously, I would be crazy by now if you will ask me what is the square root of 290,871,957,991 to the 9th power. I need a help from my friend who knows a lot about calculations, the scientific calculator.

I will not try to become a mathematic genius or an Einstein wannabe admitting I'm really good at mathematics. I'm one of you people. Just like many others, mathematics is my weakness. Perhaps that is one of the reason why I did not take up an engineering course.

I remember back in college, my calculus professor always say, "Calculation is a form of Art!". Gah! How can I be artistic when I don't really like calculating. But lucky me, I really do not have to deal with all those tensions like students majoring in mathematics. We are allowed to use calculators in some circumstances because it is not our major. However, exams are really calculator free!

I'm really not good at it, but I believe I'm really not bad. I can answer 2x2=4. Isn't that enough proof I can do mathematics? Hah. Seriously, I can mathematics when the figures are still in 5's of 6's, but I get a little confused when the figures increased. I get worried whenever I see the division and multiplication sign! Well, I can do simple operations with them but seeing exponents or Nth powers added really blows me away. What more with those logarithms, tangents and alike. Gah! I'm a self-proclaimed math looser!

I know a couple of people who really do computations really good. I have friends who even compete for the Nationals and he was even brought to Singapore for a Physics and Math contest and he did great at it. I don't feel envy. Maybe it's because I have already accepted the fact that we humans have our own special skills. I'm just unfortunate that I'm no good at calculations. But God knows how hard I really tried to be good at it.

So people, if you really know you're not good at something, don't pretend to be some wacky geniuses, especially if you're working in a financial office firm! Haha, you don't wanna become the reason for your company's bankruptcy, right?
